chromosomes

coiled thread-like structures of DNA and histone, which is a protein, in the cell nucleus. They are only visible as separate structures during the division of the nucleus (karyokinesis) during the cell cycle. Chromosomes are subdivided into genes and contain the 'genetic information' of a cell.
