to look quickly at headings, sub-headings and topic sentences to get a general idea of what a text is about. Skimming tells us about the type of text (novel, encyclopaedia or newspaper report), style of the text (descriptive, factual or objective), what the text is about, the tone or point of view of the writer, and makes it possible to sift through various sources to find something, instead of reading everything closely.
