a shortened form of a word, e.g. Mr for Mister, st for street, Prof. for professor, Rev. for Reverend. If the abbreviation ends in the same letter as the last letter of the word (as in Mr or st), the abbreviated word does not end in a full stop. If the abbreviation ends with a different letter from the last letter of the word (as in Prof. or Rev.), it does end in a full stop. In the case of well-known abbreviations of names, e.g. SABC or ANC, no full stops are used.
