plural

a form of the word that indicates that you are talking about more than one person or thing. A plural can be formed by:
- adding -s, e.g. girl – girls
- adding -es (if the word ends in an -s or s-sound), e.g. class – classes, fish – fishes
- changing a final y by adding -ies, e.g. party – parties
- adding an -s only, if the final y is preceded by a vowel, e.g. day – days
- adding an -x to words of French origin ending in -eau, e.g. plateau – plateaux
- adding -i to words of Latin origin ending in -us, e.g. syllabus – syllabi
