in language: the relationship between the subject and the action expressed by the verb in a sentence; indicates whether the subject of a sentence acts (active voice) or is acted upon (passive voice). To change a sentence from active to passive voice, the sentence must have an object. The object changes to become the subject in the active voice. See active voice and passive voice.
