a participle that usually ends in ed, en or t, e.g. written, completed, lost. Past participles can be used in the following ways:

  • As an adjective, e.g. The written text is available. The completed task must be handed in tomorrow.
  • With an auxiliary verb, to form a finite verb, e.g. I have written her a letter. I have completed my homework.
