5 ways to spend your 67 minutes on Mandela Day

by camilla.costa

Mandela Day is celebrated on the 18th of July and is a global event, celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela, who spent 67 years of his life fighting for justice in South Africa. Now, we’re not saying spend 67 years of your life doing the same, but to commemorate his life and to honour his legacy, spend at least 67 minutes on the 18th of July spreading love, peace and kindness.

Here are 5 ways to do exactly that:

Help the needy
Rally up some of your friends and show the homeless some love and kindness, what’s a loaf of bread between friends? We all have at least one can of beans or mielies in the cupboard that hasn’t been used since the dawn of ages. Why not give these to a person in need?

Visit an old age home
“With age comes wisdom” is not just a saying, but a way of life. Spend some time with the elderly and who knows what you may learn.

Clean-up the environment
So, if you’re not a people person, this one is for you. Do something good for Mother Nature, whether it be picking up litter or recycling, we’re sure Mama Afrika would appreciate it.

Give someone a hug
Okay, we know giving a random stranger a hug could be awkward, but trust me, you could make their day. You never know how someone's day is going. By just making the effort to throw a smile or give them a hug, it could mean the absolute world to them.

Build kennels with the SPCA
The need for proper kennels at the SPCA is so urgent, also, why give up the opportunity to spend 67 minutes with puppies!?! Go over to the SPCA and offer a helping hand, who knows, you might just find your new best friend!
